Power grid failure leads to blackout

Bangladeshi power sector officials said on October 4 that due to grid failure, a large area of power failure occurred in Bangladesh that day. At present, the power supply is gradually recovering.

Shamim Hassan, an official of the power sector, said that at about 14:00 on the same day, grid failures caused power outages in 75% to 80% of Bangladesh. The cause of power failure is under investigation, and 45% of the power failure areas have recovered power supply. As of the evening of that day, it was unclear when full power supply could be restored.

According to Reuters, Bangladesh relies on imported natural gas to generate electricity to provide 75% of the country's electricity. In recent years, the increase in residential electricity consumption has boosted the demand for electricity. Due to the inability to meet the increased demand for electricity, Bangladesh has cut off power for many times since this year and taken measures such as quota power supply.

According to the data provided by the department, the peak 4-day electricity consumption in Bangladesh is 3% higher than the expected value of the power department. In addition, several natural gas power stations are short of fuel.

Shahidula Azim, vice president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said that in response to the power shortage, garment manufacturers have been using generators, but the power outage on the 4th was unexpected, and some offices had to be closed. Bangladesh Mobile Phone Operators Association said that mobile communication and network services in some areas may be affected by power outages.
