Power transmission lines may develop ice accumulation under specific meteorological conditions, which depend on multiple atmospheric factors and environmental conditions. The necessary meteorological conditions for ice accumulation on transmission lines include high average relative humidity (≥85%), significant wind speeds (≥1 m/s), low air temperatures, and conductor surface temperatures ranging from -5°C to 0°C.

Based on the severity of damage to power systems, ice accumulation is primarily classified into four types: white frost, rime, rain rime, and mixed rime. Among these, rain rime and mixed rime exhibit strong adhesion, readily causing transmission line failures. Ice accumulation typically involves a combination of multiple freezing types. Uneven ice buildup or ice shedding at different times can severely endanger transmission lines, easily triggering mechanical and electrical accidents. Therefore, prompt intervention is essential.

Currently, ice monitoring methods primarily include image detection, tension measurement, and a combination of online monitoring with manual ice observation. Under extreme weather conditions, routine inspections have limited effectiveness. However, installing visual monitoring devices on transmission towers and integrating them with intelligent backend systems enables timely and accurate assessment of ice accumulation on power lines.

What should be done when power lines become iced over? Prevention and control measures include sustainable de-icing of iced power lines through AC/DC short-circuit current de-icing, drone-mounted insulated rods for de-icing, and mechanical de-icing using insulated operating rods. Additionally, mobile DC de-icing units can be transported by vehicle to perform de-icing on any section of overhead lines, ensuring safe and stable operation.

Ensuring the safe and stable operation of transmission lines has become a major challenge facing the industry. Leveraging its extensive technical expertise, Dingxin Smart Technology has introduced a Transmission Line Microwave Icing Monitoring Device, providing an effective solution to address this challenge.
